The History of Hoop Earrings

Most of us consider hoops to be a vintage-inspired silhouette synonymous with the bohemian fashion of the 1970s and the early 2000s. However, hoop earrings have a long tradition that proves style is eternal.

We can trace this earring style back to ancient civilization, with the Romans and Egyptians crafting hoop earrings out of gold and sterling silver. Hoop earrings became a status symbol amongst ancient Egyptians, who believed the circular shape protected against evil spirits.  The Romans were the first to start incorporating precious stones and pearls into hoop earrings, a trend we still see today.

Flash forward to the 20th century, and hoop earrings experienced a revival in the ‘60s and ‘70s thanks to the free-spirited hippie movement. Pop stars and celebrities have often claimed hoop earrings as their signature, with singers like Madonna and J-Lo wearing them in music videos throughout the early 2000s.

Today, hoop earrings tend to be either minimalistic or oversized. Huggie earrings are amongst the smallest you’ll find, though larger hoops can incorporate more ornate detailing.

The Hoop Earrings Everyone Needs in Their Closet

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when trying new earring styles. You want to choose a silhouette that compliments your facial structure and helps to accentuate your appearance.

The general rule for choosing earrings is to go for the opposite of your face shape. For example, if you have a long and narrow face, choose huggie hoops, while round faces can wear longer hoops to give the illusion of a slimmer face.

We’re sharing three of the most popular hoops that deserve a spot in your jewelry box.

  1. Huggie Hoops

The smallest hoop earrings are known as ‘huggies’. These are perfect for earring stacking or wearing solo for a more subtle look. They’re understated and easy to wear with any hairstyle. Check out the ‘Energetic Euphoria Hoop’ as an everyday sterling silver hoop.

  1. Large Hoops

Large hoops are the OG of this classic jewelry trend. While they might look oversized, these earrings are lightweight enough to wear comfortably for several hours. We love to style oversized hoops with a sleek ponytail or updo to show off the earrings in all their glory. The ‘Vibrant Dreamscape Hoop’ is an understated thin earring that works for every occasion.

  1. Pearl Hoops

Elevate your hoop earrings by adding pearls for a luxury feel. The Blossoming Confidence Hoop’ contrasts a row of oversized pearls with a gold and diamond hoop for a modern take on feminine fashion.
